You can check LinuxCommand.org to get some quick and easy tutoring regarding using the command line under Linux. Check the link in my signature for more on "which distro?"

Hello - you don't have to use the command line with Linux, but it helps!

From a completely technical point of view Linux and apple don't differ very much. (Apple kernel is BSD, which is like Linux).
Their HUGE difference though is how they treat the user in terms of freedom and choice. Linux will give you infinite choice to which GUI you want to use, which login manager you want to use, which terminal, which kernel,etc...(don't need to worry about all this from the beginning, just pick a user-friendly distro and you won't need to bother with all these for a while, until you want and feel ready to) .Whatever you want to do in Linux you are free to do! It is YOUR choice! Apple on the other hand gives you THE ONE & ONLY program for each task. As Uncyclopedia describes it in humor “Yes, iKnow iM retarded.”
Oh, and the price tag of apple is on the ceiling...
Btw Main Page - Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia rocks! It has very funny articles on windows, linux and mac!!
In a world without walls and fences, who needs windows and gates?

My boyfriend that uses the exact same distribution as me, and I use the terminal (command prompt) almost exclusively, and he uses the package manager. Linux won't really make you choose. Ubuntu is easy, user friendly, and works fairly well out of the box, as it were. I had some issues setting up my boyfriend's laptop for wireless (him and his stupid Acer), but I've gotten it worked out now, and won't let him live it down that his girlfriend could fix his computer and he can't. So, no, you don't HAVE to use commands. For ideas on easy to use distributions, Ubuntu is good, and I've heard good things about Linux Mint. Good luck!

As suggested by others, U DONT NEED to know linux commands to use today's Linux desktops. Since your basic need is to browse and watch various media files, I would suggest simple and easy to manage distibutions like Ubuntu & OpenSuse 11.0 & yes chose gnome desktop during installation (In linux you have the choice to use ur fav desktop GUI). The advantage with these two distibution is the in built update manager which downloads & updates required plugins & codecs with just few clicks. I personally use OpenSuse 11.0...nice distibution.

I have found that Mandriva and openSUSE can be operated without ever touching the CLI unless you wish. They have very good control panels which can be used to do most sysadmin stuff using GUIs.

..thank you all ..seems very encouraging....is there any charge to download any of (ubuntu or opensuse)?
..a problem is that the Asus install disk was remotely disallowed (it doesn't show up on my PC, it does on a friend one's) by MSFT and I guess I can't reformat the drive to form 2 partitions and so install Linux on one..
..also..how will I download it if there is not connection. maybe download first and then burn it on disk? (if windows didn't put any spells on other systems downloads that is)..
..thanks again you all..I will exilarant of exiting the legal criminal scam system.

No charge to download any of it, it's all open-source and free. You can download it and burn it onto a disc, and it'll work fine. Ubuntu comes with partitioning software in the install.

..is it better to partition..? I have a 40g HD but I only use 20% of it...
..also..could I easily install VC , cd player, ethernet modem? I'm not sure the asus install disk will run.(is it needed?) ...is not running now..but that I assume it is because of the MSFT spell...once I get off from the evil domain maybe it will
..thanks..
