    Another new convert...

...recently decided to go the Linux route. I chose Ubuntu to start with, and am enjoying it. Just a quickie, is Ubuntu a good distro to begin with? I'm sure similar questions have been asked, and whilst this is a subjective issue, I'd appreciate some opinions on this. In my case, I've worked as a Network Administrator on Microsoft platforms, and I'm eager to learn the nuts and bolts of Linux, and am wondering if Ubuntu is a good distro to start with.

    Cheers

    Hi, pirates

Ubuntu is certainly a very "popular" distro to start with.

Whether or not it's good for you would be for you to decide. Hope it all works out for you and if it doesn't, try another distro.

    Best of luck with it.

    Hi O,

As I may have mentioned, I'm comfortable with Ubuntu and it's ease of use makes it a pleasure to work with and I think these factors are important or one can easily gain a negative perspective on "Linux". Once I feel comfortable with the underlying aspects of Linux in general, I will look at more advanced distros.

    Cheers,
    M

    Hi, pirates! Welcome to LinuxForums!

Actually there is another thread that you may have missed that concerns this topic. Link. Ubuntu is a fine choice for beginners. Very upfront and user friendly. And since you can use the CLI on any distro, you'll be fine with Ubuntu for a while while you start looking at the "nuts n bolts" you mentioned.
