    Need to setup file server

    Hello everyone.

Let me start by saying how nnob I am with Linux. I actually am horrible with it! But I'd like to learn it. Also I realize this question might belong somewhere else but since I know next to nothing about linux I might as well start here. Here goes.

I need a file server. Thing is I'd like mainly to be able to access my files and folders from any computer, but also anywhere (over the internet). I'd like to avoid FTP as I find it slow and awkward; I'd rather have something like live folders, VPNish connection, etc.

I know enough to say that Samba seems perfect for my needs, except if I want to access my files over the net. And Apache is great for a web server, but how good would it be for file management...?

If anyone can suggest anything, that'd make my day!!

    Thanks
    ts

    Hi.

Like TuxKnight I have found HowtoForge very useful.

For many server topics, I have found the items below also useful. Look over the descriptions at Amazon ... cheers, drl

Thank you both! I have finally decided on an Ubuntu server, and even if I'm still fighting heavily with all the configs, I think I'll get through it

    Thanks
