Hello: wireless signal
Hello everyone, I was looking for the best area to introduce myself and I thought this would be the best place.
I am a huge Windows XP SP2 lover but I enrolled in an ISS certificate program that doesn't user Windows XP. The certificate program has labs that involve programming in C and the class uses Fedora Core 9 terminal. So I decided to be proactive and install XP and Fedora on my laptop as a dual boot which went very well but kind of stinks that I only have a 60 GB HD total to share between each operating system. After using Fedora for a week and playing around and learning the interface/settings, I actually really enjoy this operating system. I couldn't believe that this would be an easy operating system to use.
The only thing I am not happy with is that my wireless signal isn't as strong as it is on my XP - not sure why though.
Also, how do I install Adobe Flash player and shockwave player because I tried last night, and running the install wasn't as easy as I thought.
Thanks!

Program installation in Linux has a different approach than Windows. Instead of downloading programs and install them by double clicking,
you install them from the "repository". The command for Fedora is the following.
Open a terminal and type:
It will ask for your password.Code:sudo yum install flashplugin-nonfree

You should go to the adobe website and install their flash repository rpm. Then you can install flash from your favourite package manager (either kyum or yumex - you do have one of those installed, dont you?).

I wouldn't bother with Adobe reader, myself. I think Fedora comes with Gnome, so you should find Evince already installed. In Kde you have Kpdf. Both of these applications do the same job as Adobe Reader, but they're much less CPU-thirsty and a hell of a lot faster.

Tsk tsk. Manchunian, please remember that Adobe Flash != Adobe Reader... And Macromedia exists no more...

Darn! I misread the post! I was convinced he'd said Adobe Reader! And you say Macromedia exists no more? Well, some sites still require Shockplayer, which of course, can't be installed on Linux.

With the wireless signal, I have the same thing. With the display, Xp will show perfect signal and Ubuntu will show from 2/5 to 4/5. But I have no network issues.
I think that Xp's display might be some thing like above 70% = excellent and will show full bars. Whereas linux could have something a little different. But if it's working then I don't see it as something to worry about.~~Geek Is Sexy~~Desktops - Ubuntu HardyServer FreeBSD
