    Is there still usenet that is text based, like the one i used to access from unix back in the early 90's ? or is usenet all web-based now ? just wondering because I was reading something about it when I was looking at irc chat. thanx

    Usenet is still there.

    There are plenty of news clients out there, I think Thunderbird can handle it but if you are looking for the *ahem* binaries you may be better off with something like pan. What you see on the web is just a web based usenet client.

    I don't know if there is one that works from the terminal if that's what you mean.

    While usenet is still text-based, there are some decent GUI clients. As this is 'old-fashioned' internet, there are lots and lots of applications to choose from, the popular ones are KNode and Pan.
