Small version of linux for DNS
I am looking for a small linux distro for a DNS server. I don't need graphics. I searched and found a few of the small floppy loads, DSL, sisela, etc, but they were stripped down too much. All other searches come back with the latest and greatest which I don't need for this. Does anyone know of a distro in the middle, not too small but not too large that it comes with everything under the sun. I just need to load bind on an older machine?
Thanks

Could have a look at arch linux, or crux.
Depending on how small you need, gentoo could be setup for a server or if you want to try, you could try with BSD.
I think smoothwall, though that it mainly for a linux firewall.~~Geek Is Sexy~~Desktops - Ubuntu HardyServer FreeBSD

Another that might suit your needs is a basic install of Slackware. If you need even smaller, perhaps Slax would fit the bill.

You can use any distro for this. One option could be to a Debian netinstall (it just installs a base system) and then addon the packages you need for your server. You can even strip down the likes of CentOS or SUSE if you wish.

How about the Ubuntu Server edition. That has no GUI by default and it runs on modest hardware and you can install as little as you need.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Just to add a little extra variety, I'd use Smoothwall, which is really a firewall distribution, but it has DHCP and DNS built into it's system. If you run it with only a green interface, it'll do both these services, and the installed size is really small. It also lets you configure all this from a cosy web interface, straight out of the box.

Excellent. Thanks for the ideas. I will check them all out. I knew there had to be something out there besides the full blown desktop, but when I searched on small distro's the results were things like the floppy versions, which are amazing considering the size, but I didn't have to go that small. I am have a PIII 1GHz which would probably run ok with the full graphics packages, but I just wanted to optimize for what I needed.
Again thanks for all the suggestions, I can't wait to check them out..

I am really liking Ubuntu server. It is only using 400 megs of drive space, no swap, and about 60k of memory. Very nice...

Thanks again
