    yum only in fedora/redhat?

    I am very interested to install softwares using yum in fedora. But i tried to do the same in ubuntu an not worked. Is yum spcial of fedora? Can we use any other technique instead of yum?

    Hi, Tom!

    yum is, indeed, specific to Fedora and Red Hat OS's. But Ubuntu has apt-get, which is very similar. Example would be
    Code:
    sudo apt-get <package_name>

    SuSE has yast, Gentoo has (I think)emerge. I'm not too sure about Mandriva.

    For openSUSE, the packaging tool is now Zypper (YaST is just a frontend to this now). For Mandriva, its urpmi. On both distros, you can also use SMART as an alternative to the default packaging tools.
