    how to know i386, i586, or i686

    I am using intel Pentium 4 processor (compaq presario desktop PC). 256MB RAM. I want to download a new version of my favourite distro (Fedora). Can I download i686 version? (I am usually download i386)

    Hello,

    yes. Everything of the Pentium merchandise since Pentium II supports i686.

    PS: Get more ram.

    I also second the suggestion that you get more RAM. 256MB is obscenely low for a Pentium 4 system and it will severely limit the amount of things you can do with your computer.

    Open your terminal and type in "arch" ..Simples as that
    -------------------
    bash-3.1$ arch
    i686
    -------------------

    256 RAM is going to be stretched with Fedora....especially if you are talking about Fedora with KDE 4.1 installed.

    i686 live cd worked successfully in my system.

    Everything go fine in my fedora core 6 with 256MB RAM. Which version of fedora which my system can't pass system requirements?
    Fedora core 10?

    Fedora 10 is available in i686 as well.

    If you want to have a compilation that won't work, you will have to download the PowerPC or IA-64 version.
