Never used Linux... Want to... New machine :)
Hi,
I've never used linux before but i'd like to dual boot it with Windows Vista on my new machine.
Intel Core 2 Duo e6550 (Soon to be quad q9650)
2gb memory (soon to be 4gb)
160gb hard drive (soon to be 1tb)
Nvidia 9600gt
Creative X-FI Gamer
Will my machine have any troubles running Linux? Any hardware incompatibilities? How will my 9600gt handle compiz on a 24" 1920x1200 LCD? Is there a distro which suits my hardware best?
Thanks a lot, sorry for all the questions
Regards, DrunkenSensei91

Welcome to the forums!

Your current (and soon to be) hardware should be fine.
Compiz should work fine on it as well, other than the normal fits it gives so many users.
Just about any of the distros in the top 20 or so at DistroWatch.com should work on it.
Hope you have lots of fun with it.Last edited by oz; 10-25-2008 at 12:52 AM. Reason: spell

Nope no incompatibilities there. Just make sure to get a distribution that supports your video card. I had a heck of a time with Linux when I got started trying to get it to acknowledge my graphics card, but I had an older distro, so anything new, you shouldn't have a problem.

Yeah most of that will be overkill in linux....it's way more efficient than Windows so 1-2 gigs is more than enough for RAM (I have a system running 512 and it's fine), 1TB of hard drive space, either you are really inefficient with deleting stuff or you just have way too much stuff to begin with
The CPU from duo core to quad core you won't realize that much of a difference in speed (definitely not enough to justify the cost of the upgrade) and you should be able to run that nvidia card no problem with Ubuntu.
Bodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17
