VLC player is available for linux as well. Install that instead of using VLC for windows using wine.

Definitely look for linux version of popular windows software (I believe VLC was originally made for Linux..I may be lying though )

Also, if there isn't a Linux version ask in the forums what an equivalent Linux program would be. This way you get several things:

    1. You avoid using wine when there is no need to (Wine isn't exactly the most stable program, plus it chews up more RAM than you'd want to watch a video,etc...)

    2. Lots of open source software that replaces closed source software is much better than the main stream stuff -- by better I mean uses less of your computer, more efficient, more user friendly, etc....

    3. One of the biggest points of Linux is to support the development of open source, by downloading these software you are doing your part to contribute to the "system". Also, if you report bugs it ALWAYS helps developers

Last note, any every day task you need on a computer has Linux software to support it (Video you can do VLC, Kaffiene, Totem, etc.., Audio has Rythmbox, Amarok, etc....)

Good luck and welcome to the forums
