fast simple linux distro
I have a old PIII 1GHz laptop (dell C500) I would like a simple(fast) linux distro, that is easy to use. It is my girlfriends laptop and she wants me to put windows on it, I need to prove linux is better.
I currently have ubuntu on it and it is really slow, I don't need any fancy graphics, just a simple desktop.

You can try Xubuntu, which is ubuntu with lighter XFCE desktop environment and easy to use (like ubuntu). Or Vector Linux.

I agree with Atom that Xubuntu would be a good option to try, especially since you are already familiar with the *buntu base system.

what version of Windows did she want? XP would probably lag on that machine just as much as Ubuntu did (maybe even more). I'm surprised you had horrible lag unless you have like 256 RAM, then...maybe you should tell her to invest in a bit more RAM (I have my mom's computer on Ubuntu, it's a 667 I believe with 512, there is a bit of lag but it's not horrible).

Either Xubuntu or Fedora with IceWM will do well on a P3. I should no... I have a P3 with Fedora on it, no problems.
