    Linux Live CD?

Im trying to learn more about linux for a job and while I have used a few Linux live cds before. Anyone have any suggestions on a good distro to use?

I want to mess around with with the live cd's before I attempt to install it on a computer.

    Welcome to the forums!

Check the link in my signature for lots of good information on getting started with Linux.

You can find lots of liveCDs here:

Hope you have fun with it...

I would think that there would be three considerations:
1, which desktop you are thinking of using, Gnome or KDE or some other
2, any limits in the hardware, i.e. the speed of the CPU and mainly the
    amount of RAM
3, the amount of support readily available for the distribution.

Ubuntu 8.10 (Gnome), just out, is handy for beginners , very popular with many users, with ready help, and exists as Kubuntu (KDE) and Xubuntu. openSUSE 11.0 (KDE 3.5)is what I use installed for its good secutity, easy package installation and updating, media support, and user base. It is found with a less stable KDE 4 in a live-cd. What you start with is what will likely come to seem right to you, but in the case of 11.0 and perhaps others, the ease and usability of the distro is not reflected in its live version.

I downloaded Ubuntu and I liked the look and feel of it. I use some programs on windows, Firefox and Pidgin so its good to see some of those on there.

I had a problem when I tried to install it, I got to about 75% and I got an error saying my cd or cd drive was dirty. The CD i burnt was fine and I cleaned my drive and still happened.

My set up is pretty good I just dropped 600 on it not to long ago.

    3ghz Core 2 duo
    ATI 4850
    4 gigs of ram

So im guessing I should have no trouble running any type of Linux. But Im just trying to remember which layout I liked. I used a Goblinx Live cd a year or so back and I think it was Fluxbox.

If you install Ubuntu 8.1, you should run this command to install all your multi-media, web, streaming video and dvd -

    Code:
    sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list && wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y ubuntu-restricted-extras non-free-codecs w32codecs totem-mozilla libdvdcss2

That can happen if you get a bad burn. When burning distros it's always a good idea to do it at a lower speed. Also if you are familiar with checksums distros usually supply one for their discs, that way you can verify the burn before trying to install it.

Don't worry it sounds more complicated than it is.

Do you know what version of Linux will be used for the job you are starting or looking for? It'll probably be best to focus your efforts on that distribution.

That's a very good point. Also, if you are going to be using servers via a terminal then there isn't much point learning a specific gui; at least for your job...

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Well I haven't gotten the job yet, im just trying to prepare my self a bit. They said they would train if needed.
But I would be using Linux for data recovery and I think thats all. So I guess I should use one of those CD's to. But I just wanted to expand my computer knowledge a bit before the Interview.
