    msn dial up and...

I'm building a ubuntu box for my friend up in oregon, based on a dell 4700. the thing is, she lives out in the sticks and is using msn dial up. so far her cable co. won't provide high speed where she is. just wondering if the great satan itself (msn) will even allow linux to run ? I have no problem at all with my at and t d.s.l connection, in fact I'm really happy with it, but just don't know about actuall msn.

    Hi bigvoo,
I have never used MSN dial up and it has been a long time since I used any dial up provider, but unless MSN uses a proprietary dial up program like AOL does, then you should be able to connect using the tools such as KPPP and WVdial, which should be supplied by your distro.

Good Luck and please do let us know how it goes.

If it uses standard protocols and doesn't require any proprietary software, then I'd say your only problem will be whether the modem will cause trouble. Winmodems were the bane of Linux for a long time. Beyond that there are lots of tools for dialup and I think the new Network Manager has a very easy way to set it up.
