Pre newbie Requires Video Advice
I am seriously thinking of switching from Windows to Linux not just because it is free but I've been having a few OS problems recently. I currently use my machine to make movies using the moviemaker program, and seem to have found the ideal replacement program in kdelive, but problems remain. I asked the kdelive forum if the program would save movies in a format that would run on Windows machines, as as I often compile them for other people to view on non Linux machines. but the reply told me nothing that I didn't know already. I am also in a quandary as to which KDE distro to use: Kubuntu or Freespire. I have also heard that there is a distro you can run from a USB flash databar for a trial.
I would be extreamly greatful for some advice on these matters, as I really would like to switch but without the guarantee that I can save the movies in a suitable format I'm stuck

Hello,
whether Windows can play a certain video is a question of the actual codec used, but generally spoken it is possible. There are free file formats, like OGG, for which free video players can be found on both platforms.
I do not know KDELIVE, but if you do not mind trying another program, there exist some LiveCDs especially made for multimedia processing tasks. For example, here is a list: Cinelerra :: a video editor and compositor for LinuxDebian GNU/Linux -- You know you want it.

Cinelerra is THE video editing tool in Linux. It's very powerful, but it isn't easy to use at the beginning. Personally, I use Kino. Trouble is, Kino alway wants to import videos to dv format, and there is no option to export to avi. Here is another solution. I haven't tried it yet, so I'd be interested to know if it's any good.
