    Child guardian internet software

Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there purchased the new Acer Netbooks. I was thinking of buying one for my daughter for Xmas, but then I read up on it and it said that they use Linpus for its OS. This is fine but I was wondering if there was any software out there for this OS that could limit her internet activities. We currently use a child guardian type software for windows. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I would recommend switching out linpus for Ubuntu because it has a lot of support and good for new linux users. There is software to control web access, first off, you can start with your router settings but going from there you can do lots of things:

sendmeon.com - How to set up a childproof PC using Linux - Part 2

those are instructions for xubuntu but they apply for Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) as well
    Bodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking about the router settings, but was unsure if I could just narrow it down to her computer. How hard is it to switch it over to Ubuntu? I would like to do that but I could just imagine Xmas morning trying to take it back after she opens it. LOL. Is there a tutorial on how to swap out the OS? Thanks Again!!

If you burn an Ubuntu 8.10 live-cd it would give you an idea of performance. Otherwise there is http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/nbr and Download Ubuntu Netbook Remix 1.0.1 for Linux - Ubuntu for Netbooks! - Softpedia It might be a little less supported for limited internet access.

You might also want to check out the possibility of using OpenDNS nameservers. It doesn't cost anything and it allows you to filter out certain types of websites without having to add any software:

OpenDNS > Home Network > Solutions

hmm well I agree with Ozar but I'd say that this is a bit complicated and a software install would be faster and easier to understand. The DNS method will give you a lot more control of certain aspects but I think for your purposes the software method will work, assuming you have enough RAM to run the software without seeing lag, I doubt it's too bulky as it just filters
