Dont use Fedora so i cant say if one comes with the distro bu try using yum or an equivalent package manager to download one
If it freezes, perhaps go away and give it a significant amount of time to unfreeze if not, you'l just have to reboot.
I havent heard of a way to make checkpoints in Linux, just keep an installation/restore disc nearby
Updating Fedora 9 to Fedora 10 via yum shouldnt give you any problems and Fedora 10 should run without Issue.
Most personal files are stored in your /home directory so just copy that to USB or something similar.
Hope this helps.
