Hey everyone,
I just recently bought a Gateway M6866 laptop, and I've been having a hell of a time figuring out which distro would be right for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Has anyone installed linux on this gateway model lappy before? There's almost no information through google saying otherwise.

Welcome to the forums!
There's more to it than just being right for your hardware. The distro of your choice needs to suit your personal tastes as well.
Which distros have you tried on it, and what problems did you encounter?oz

I always suggest new linux users to use one of the following:
Ubuntu 8.10 --> I am currently using this distro, it's quite stable, frequent updates, huge community for support
Fedora Core --> Also very stable, it's where I started linux
OpenSuse --> Same thing but KDE based (some argue that KDE is slightly like Windows...I'm not sure if I agree with that). The only problem with this is that the new OpenSuse uses KDE4.1 which is not stable at all and you might get frustrated quickly.
Those would be the three that I'd suggest for a newer user. If you are tempted to try another one you might look into Debian.Bodhi 1.3 & Bodhi 1.4 using E17
Dell Studio 17, Intel Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, E17
