To what end? If you're looking for fastest graphics, then it'll be down to the video card you buy.
If you want the fastest web server, that'll be limited by the bandwidth to your server and the web services you run.
Fastest at interpreted languages may be down to the speed of your memory bus or the speed of disk interfaces.
The fastest for number crunching for solving algorithms or statistical problems will most likely be down to the speed of your processor bus.
And the whole thing is affected by the number of background processes you run.
But it's all relative. My server running two vnc sessions on it's twin P3 processors seems about as quick as my 64-bit desktop if i'm just browsing the internet.
I suppose you can always re-buid the kernel if you want to squeeze performance out of your computer. You'd get much better mileage by upgrading the parts of the system that cause slowness in what you are trying to do.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

Check out this Distrowatch list about lightweight Linux distributions. I have tried Puppy Linux and found it very good and super fast.

Welcome to the forums!
The version of Linux that "felt" like it was the fastest that I've ever tried was CRUX.oz

With LFS (Linux from scratch) you can end up with a very light weight system, the downside is that you need to build everything yor self, so it requires some knowledge about the Linux system. You can end up running a lightning fast system. So I suggest, learn a bit about Linux and compiling and then start digging in to LFS. You can tweak everything from the ground upto your needs.
