new to linux
hi all I am new to all this so I just have a couple question I woulds like to install a linux software but I dont know which one to install. I am thinking ubuntu 8.10 but I ve download it and try to install it on a new hard drive but it doesn't work is there a second or first software to install. i know computers and how to install an OS and make new partitions but I cant even get that far. any help would be cool

Ubuntu is probably about as good a place to start as any.
Check the following HowTo for instructions on downloading, burning to disk, and booting Linux properly:
