XMMS Please help me install
Well I am very new @ this, I have went with a Virtual Workststion with Ubuntu and I am totaly lost.I am trying to install something to listen to mp3 so I downloaded ( XMMS ) I read the newbie thread at the beggining and figured my way through to the configureing part, I changed to the directory that the program is in and done the ./configure command and it went through a sries of things and finaly came up with this (configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first *** ) I don't know a whole lot but I am trying to fight my way through this.
I have a HP Pavilion dv8000 centrino 1g ram win XP with Virtual Workstation with Fedora Slackware and Ubuntu as guest.
Thanks

Howdy dyess002@millry.net, I went into my Synaptic Package manager in my Ubuntu 8.04 and found this
So I figure you should be able to install XMMS 2 from your Ubuntu package manager, unless you just like installing from source instead.Client/server based media player system
XMMS2 is a redesign of the XMMS music player. It features a client-server
model, allowing multiple (even simultaneous!) user interfaces, both textual
and graphical. All common audio formats are supported using plugins. On top of
this, there is a flexible media library to organize your music.
This package is a meta package depending on various other XMMS2 packages.
Installing this package gets you a commandline client and enables XMMS2
playback of Ogg Vorbis and MP3 files from local and remote sources.Linux Registered User # 475019

Which Ubuntu?
Open synaptic package manager and install these packages:
libgtkmm-dev
libguilegtk-1.2-dev
You can also install them from command line with this command:
Code:sudo apt-get install libgtkmm-dev libguilegtk-1.2-dev
- 12-30-2008 #4Means you are missing a dependancy that is needed to install xmms. That is why installing through Synaptic package manager is suggested, because it picks up on missing dependancies and installs them for you.(configure: error: *** GLIB >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first *** )Linux Registered User # 475019

I agree with rokytnji. One should install packages through default package manager only unless machine doesn't have internet access.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Thanks for the info, I put this on late last night and didn't figure to get a response so guick.
So if I install through the manager what is the ( in windows I look for .exe or a install ) extension going to look like? and what takes the place of Program Files?
Like I said I am very new at this. I can do pretty much what I want to do with windowsbut this is very diffrent, but I like it . I need a lot of help with the command's part. I thank you guys for helping.

Ok, on top taskbar is System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager
Enter your password when prompted
Click on the search bar and type in
When you see xmm 2 click on the line to see the description of software.xmms
click on the checkbox if you wish to install it
click on apply
select ok to download and install software. (You must be connected to the internet in Ubuntu to do all this)
Its that easy to install xmms, flash player, adobe reader, etc....Linux Registered User # 475019

Now that XMMS was it on a list of things that UBUNTA has to install or could I have dowloaded that file and installed it from it's folder? Say for instance I have a game that I want to install, It is a windows game ( Astro Furry ) can I move that to my Linux operrating system and download it through the manager?

Nope, unless the game is Linux compatible, which it probanaly isn't.
While your in synaptic and know how to use it now, do a search for "wine".
Read the description like i told ya, and decide if you wan't to run it. A lot of guy's that use Windows Games in Linux run it. Hear is a link to Wine Hq to get you started.
WineHQ - Run Windows applications on Linux, BSD and Mac OS X
Instead of Downloading it from their site, I suggest you install the one in your package manager first, you can always update or upgrade to the latest and greatest later, after you get your bearings on how linux works.Linux Registered User # 475019
