Type in terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal):
Raise the 2 left channels all way to the top. Press ctrl+C to exit alsamixer.Code:alsamixer
Does it say anything about codecs, or sound just doesn't come out?

I haven't seen anything about codecs. there is no sound at all and when i try to play a song from myspace for instance it wont start to play. same thing with cds it wont start to play. and when using flash like on youtube it will play the video but no sound. And by saying it wont start to play i mean the counter wont even start, it just buffers even if you hit play it wont start.

I had the same problems and took L4Linux's advice and used that alsamixer command and messed with the speaker levels and I was good to go

Not exactly sure where it would be in Ubuntu, but you should have a GUI front end for your hardware configuration... under that there should be sound configuration. Locate it and see what it says for your sound card, if it says not configured there should be an option to configure it.
Do you get any sounds at all? i.e. system sounds, error beeps, etc.
