Commands?
I have seen many people/websites stating lists of commands to do different things. I have Linux on my new Acer Netbook and to explore the OS system further (such as install programs) I need to know how to enter commands.
So how do I enter commands? What do I have to do to get the command box up?
Any help much appreciated asap

If that is the acer that runs Linpus as its distro click on settings and then teminal to bring up the terminal shell.
If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Well I have found the terminal option.
I think I am running Kernel Linux 2.6.23.9/w (That what it says when I do ctrl alt delete)
Are there any guides that are specific to that version of Linux?

Also I have found the /usr/local/src place where I am supposed to put the downloaded file I want to install but it wont let me put any files in that folder.
Does it matter what folder I put it in? Say if I kept it in my downloads and changed wherever it had the folder name to that then would it work?

You should and can download all files to your home directory, or the desktop.

You'll need root permissions to write to any folder other than your /home folder. You can check this HowTo for instructions on installing software under Linux. It's best to use your default package tool for your distribution to install software whenever possible.
If you should decide to use the command line for installing packages, be sure to check the links I posted for you above for some good command line lessons.oz

Why is installing programs so hard on Linux? Surely if you guys can just install a program using codes then you can make a program that does that for every1 who can't install.
Or is there any programs that do that already?
I went on the acer website and it showed some programs which you just unzip and it installs straight away, no hassle. I think they were .sh.zip files? Can you direct me to any other programs which I can download in this format?
I am also thinking of loading XP onto my acer aspire one. How would I go about doing this?

Yes, there are some applications that make installing software easier such as Synaptic (for Debian-based systems), URPMI (for Mandriva), Yast (for OpenSuse), and Yum (for Fedora/Redhat), and of course there are others.
Not sure about where to find the .sh.zip files you seek.
If you are wanting to replace Linux with Window XP, you'd probably get the best and faster results from posting your query on a Windows forum, although someone here might have the same hardware as you and can post about any issues that you might run into.
Best of luck with it whichever route you should take.oz

Well Revilo,I think you should search for 'Compiling from source code in Linux' in Google. It is easy to compile if you have an rpm based distro.
