Have you installed any Linux distro yet? Post your machine's specs here.
You can run exe file through wine in Linux. There are a lot Windows alternative application available in Linux. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Please note that if you want a free version of Windows that is better, stop looking at Linux. Linux is utterly different and I suggest you'd just pay for Windows. However if you are looking at something an operating system which gives you the freedom to do everything you want, be welcome. Linux is not like windows at all and if you expect it to be, you'll get trouble with it and you'll think that Linux sucks.
Linux does not suck, it is different. Wine allows you to run some exe files but it's far from perfect and it needs a lot of work. I'm not really interested in Wine any more, but for you it might be what you're looking for.
There must be some document on-line which supports my point here about Linux isn't Windows. I only can't find it, but once I do, I'll get back (if necessary). Please note I am not trying to be trolling. I am telling the hard truth, and as I said, if you want a system that is free, you are at the right place.

Try to use Wine.It will help you for running only selected apps of Windows like WinRar,Notepad etc. Also try to get Cedega if you want to play Windows games on Linux. It is not free though

Thanks to L4Linux I've found the documentation I was looking for.
There are 2 links posted by TechieMoe, although the first link returns a page forbidden error on my system, linking to the documentation.

Thanks L4Linux, and because I first found the post in Ozars signature, thanks Ozar.
