New computer system
I am completely new to the Linux OS. Right now I am in the process of building a new computer. Hardware consist of the following:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83
Gigabyte MB EP45-UD3P
OCZ 4GB 1066 RAM
250GB Seagate 7200
1TB Seagate 7200
LG 6X Blu-Ray burner
I would really like to get away from using Vista as a OS. My main goal with this system is to render my HD video and burn to BD. I'm hoping someone here is knowledgeable enough to point me in the right direction as to which distribution would be suitable for my task. Also, what issues may I face based on hardware drivers and software to proceed in this direction.
Thanks in advance !!

Welcome to the forums!

I don't really see any problems with the hardware, but not totally sure about the blu-ray burner. It will probably be fine, though. The main problem I see these days with new hardware is that onboard network controllers give some users fits so you might want to check online for any issues with network drivers for your setup and Linux. Otherwise, I think probably any of the top 10 or so distros listed at DistroWatch.com should work for you.
While waiting for additional replies, check the link in my signature for lots of good information on getting started with Linux.
Hope it turns out well for you.oz

I'm missing a videocard in your hardware specs. Not all of them work right out of the box so be sure to look around before you choose one.
Most of the network problems that Ozar mentioned are solved with the newer Linux kernels, so look for a Linuxdistro that uses version 2.6.27 (or higher).
Anyway it is wise to check the forums if any hardware (driver) problems are reported recently. This might be helpfull since you can still make your choices.Last edited by Charles4809; 01-08-2009 at 12:35 PM. Reason: typo
