    Exclamation installling help

not sure if this is where i post this questions since iam a newbie to this forum but here it goes.....

    q1:
i installed fedora core 9 on my home pc that had already had windows xp on it when i tried to install fedora core 9 on my comp (graphical way), i get a screen with funny colour lines down it unreadable i have to restart comp and then installed it the txt way which seamed to of work. is there any reason that it wont install the graphical way my system specs are amd 3700+ ,2 gb of ram, nvida 6800 gts (pci express) and multiple hdd.

    q2 :

now i tried following the grub guide on this web site (link http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...d-edition.html )

but when it asked me to us the command "find /boot/grub/stage1" to find out what hdd my MBR is on it just returns "/boot/grub/stage1" with no hd0 1 or such.

after which i tried reinstalling grub to /dev/hda but was getting a error msg in grub saying error code 17.

i would love to be able to get windows and fedora core working on my pc (if worse case i would like to be able to get my windows booting back up with out having to reinstall it).

i did try to let the fedora core auto grub set up to work its magic but the grub it installed was faulty IE didn't get past the grub _ screen.

any help you would be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Your hardware is more than sufficient but what do the 'funny colour lines' say?You should be able to install the OS in GUI.

    Grub error 17:

    Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.
When do you get this error? Do you get it when you select xp? Fedora? Both?

Use your Fedora CD, go to a terminal/konsole, login as root using "su" or "su -" (without quotes), enter password and type command: fdisk -l (lower case letter L, not a number one). Post the output here.

i cant load up any operating system on my computer at the moment .

i get the error on boot up so when my comp boots up(before i even get to the selection screen).
i get the grub msg then its starts grub loading then it gives me an error code of 17.

one thing i dont understand is why is it when i load up linux rescue and when type in the command "find /boot/grub/stage1" to find out what hdd my MBR is on it just returns "/boot/grub/stage1" with no hd0 1 or such.

as the post before i get funny lines as in the screen goes green and white alternating colours with vertical lines and that is when i have to hit the rest buttion on my comp (i have tried installing both fedora core 9 and ubuntu ).

Because you're doing it wrong. You need to log in the terminal as root and then get to the grub prompt which looks like (grub>). After you log in as root, just type "grub" without quotes, then the find command. While you're looking for the stage1, you might as well look for stage2 and do "find /boot/vmlinuz" as well as "find /vmlinuz" and post any results.

ok first up thanks for the help with the grub mistake u made (being in bash not grub and logged in as root). i tried running the find commands u asked and here are the results

    find /grub/stage1

    /grub/stage1

    (hd1,0)

    find /grub/stage2
    /grub/stage2
    (hd1,0)

    find /vmlinuz
error 15 : file not found

    find /boot/vmlinuz
error 15 : file not found

I assume you ran this command from the grub prompt? That's the kernel and without it your system obviously won't boot.

    find /grub/stage2
    /grub/stage2
    (hd1,0)
The command results above indicate Grub stage2 is on the first partition of your second drive. Is that right? How many drives do you have? Which one is Fedora on? Which one is windows on? Can you load your Fedora CD again and run the command "fdisk -l" I suggested earlier and post it? Do you have the drive with Fedora on it set as first boot priority in your BIOS?

ok i think i made the mistake with the boot loader of puting it on the MBR instead of the first sector..

i am reinstalling windows and linux now.

i have one more question if i accidentally format the wrong drive (wich i did) is there anyway to recover the files on the disk (i have not touched it since i reformated the drive)?.

any help on this matter would be a great help
