I don't run a rpm based distro or use yum. But I got this for reinstalling yum from a old 2007 post, so the yum tar.gz may be a bit dated. so for lines 4 and 5 and 6 just substitute the name of the yum tar.gz you downloaded. Some other Fedora/Mandriva/ Open Suse users who use rpm distros should be able to coach you through this. I have just given the basic steps for reinstalling yum from a old link. Good luck.
As root,
cd ~
mkdir setups
cd setups
wget http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/d...m-2.0.7.tar.gz
tar -xvzf yum-2.0.7.tar.gz
cd yum-2.0.7
./configure
make

This should show you how to setup a root password in Acer Aspire one.

Hi

I've already been in and changed the root password and been able to work from root . Previously had tried the first suggestion above and got as far as 'make' then 'make install' which is when it wouldn't work, maybe I'd got the wrong version of yum?
Up until that point it was all going well...
I'm looking at a re-install of LInux from flash drive at the moment but i still think there is an easier way. How do I find the correct version of yum for my Acer Aspire one, linpus lite, bought december 2008??

Well, Like I said. I don't own a Acer Aspire one, or run Linpus. So you can take what I'm going to suggest with a grain of salt. If I was in your situation I would install the older Version of Yum I provided to get Yum reinstalled on your operating System. Then I would figure out how to upgrade it using your working yum install.
I don't know how you would go about doing a yum upgrade though. Maybe somebody else will jump in and tell you though.Linux Registered User # 475019

I'd say, go for what Roky suggests. I like to compile software, but only when I have a package manager ready to handle the dependencies. I am looking at LFS though (been working on it, but host system too contaminated) which is kind of fun. I hope to get another PC soon on which I can install Gentoo.
What roky said is probably how it should work. I don't have RedHat based systems either (only Debian and source based), and I'd really like to help you further, but I'm afraid I can't.
Hope it works, and if it doesn't, you can always reinstall your OS(last option though).
