    [SOLVED] Knoppix CD

I have encountered an Unmountable_Boot_Error with a Windows XP Home OS on a Dell Inspiron which I detest working on. So far I have a Knoppix CD running a Linux based OS so that I can access the files. I have followed every step carefully and I am excited to rescue everything that I thought was lost.

So now I am trying to copy the files over to my external harddrive through the usb port and it keeps telling me that it cannot write a folder or a file that I try to copy. Please help. Thanks.

P.S. I have followed the steps where I Plug in the USB cord first, load the CD, right click on the external drive and clicked yes to change the read/write permissions. For some reason it still tells me I cannot write any of the files that I wish to move.

Have a look at "System recovery with Knoppix" on System recovery with Knoppix

I have done this - but it is hard to remember (senior moment). I wonder if you need to change the read/write permissions of desktop icon covering the files you want to copy, not the external disk you want to write to.

"Again, no problem: right-click the desktop icon to bring up a nice menu with a "Change read/write mode" option. This mounts the filesystem on the partition as read/write. Now you can edit any file."

Thank you for your help. After restarting the Knoppix CD and changing the read/write permissions agian I was finally able to start moving the files. Again, thanks for your help.
