Major noob with both ati and amd cards

Hello. Im new to linux and have very serious problems

    1. when i use steam with wine and try to install counter strike source (never got to try the game on linux yet), the screen goes on the fritzs
    2. sometimes when i have dosbox on fullscreen and then put it back to the desktop, the screen goes on the fritzs
    3. dosbox doesnt recouldnise my joystick (xwingcd)
    4. tried running the windows port of x-wing with wine, and, you know what im going to say next
    5. when i played extreme tux racer on windows, the music was pretty cool, on linux, however, for some reason it lost some of its feel
    6. dosbox doesnt have support for gmidi in linux
    7. from what i heard, linux doesnt support valve hammer
    8. to top it off, the computer has an ati radion hd 2004xt or whatever its called, and a AMD phenom

By "on the fritzs" i mean the screen gargles up and goes diagnally down to the left. Im currently running linux mint 5 kde with ichthux addon installed. If there is a better distro for me then let me know. Until then ill be living with a screwed up screen when i try to run certain apps.

edit: and before somebody asks, im not interested in getting a nvidia card

I think that the answer is pretty simple. I think you are just trying to do too much Windows things

Then a question. Are you using Tux racer ported for GNU/Linux? If you try using the Windows version in wine, stop doing that. There is a Linux version available. Look in the software repositories to find it.

Gaming in Wine is not the way to go. My advice is go for a dual boot. Running a Windows application natively is much easier than running it in Wine. I tried it once, but went straight back to Windows for this. I don't game so much so I decided to remove Windows from my system.
