emachines e520, cant find GUI
ok, I got this laptop for work. it was a buy.com special..here it is..
Acer eMachines 520-2496 Notebook - LXN070C008 - Buy.com
this laptop was new factory sealed, its running limpus ver 9.2. heres the deal, Im a total linux newb, I can figure out how to launch the GUI on this thing. ive searched
ive tried startx, startkde, all I get is command not found. it boots up in the root directory... [root@localhost /]# to be exact.
am I in the wrong directory?? its not possible the buy.com is selling systems with no GUIs is it?? Look I need this thing for work, so If I cant find out how to launch the GUI or how to install one, im just going to wipe it and install XP, I dont have time to mess around with different distros, if it needs to get reloaded its getting reloaded with xp. id love to mess around with linux and I really thought this system could be the right one to do it with, but if its going to be this much trouble, I dont have time right now, as it is right this things holding me up.
Ive been to the linpus website and its totally useless, its pretty but that about it, I tried to download a manual and all I get is some ftp that doesn't work, there no way to contact anyone. I just feel sorry for the non techy people that may have bought this thing, it will definitely leave people not in the know with a bad taste of linux. can I get some help, please. thanks.

well just got done with emachines support, they told me I had a software issue and their not trained in software, they wanted to refer me to their fee based tech support, I said no thanks. all I wanted them to tell me was if it has a GUI or not, they couldnt. It cant be the first call they have gotten on this. they send me a laptop that basically doesnt work and they want to charge me to get it working. a lot of these are going to be returned because of this.
