ACER ASPIRE linpus linux
I bought an ACER Aspire 5735Z-324G32Mi notebook yesterday which apparently comes with linpus linux on it.
I switched the notebook on but could not get it to install my Windows XP OS from the disc.
The notebook also did not read the resource dvd. (What is a Resource DVD ??)
It just ran straight through everything then asked for [root@localhost/]#
I tried pressing delete on start up but there was no boot from cd option available.
After a lot of research online I finally found a website with what I thought was the solution to the problem
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...nux-9-2-a.html
The site prompted me to type in dd if=/dev/zero of=dev/sda bs=512 count=1
It stated that I would be able to boot from the cd drive after this had been done.
I restarted the notebook with the Windows XP cd in the drive.
The notebook began to install from the cd drive. After less than a minute the warning page was displayed telling me to restart the pc.
I restarted the notebook but this time nothing happened … the Acer logo flashed on the screen and then just a single cursor flashed repeatedly in the top left hand corner of the screen.
If you have any advice on how, (or if), the notebook can be fixed to accept the Windows XP cd I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Assuming the hard drive in the system is sda ... if you ran the above command you wiped the bootloader code from the MBR and the partition table. This would be seen as a blank disk ... system would be forced to boot from CD or not boot at all

The thread you linked to showed similar symptoms (driver needed for SATA disk) ... does the solution not work for you also?

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for the advice. Can you please explain it again to me in simpler terms as I am a bit of an idiot when it comes to pc's.
Thanks

A stock Windows Xp cd does not come with a sata driver to load the operating system to a Acer Aspire one sata hardrive. You will need to make what is called a Slipstreamed CD XP with Acers Sata Driver included in your XP cd or load the Sata driver using the XP F6 option. I don;t run XP on Sata drives. That is what I have Linux for. So thats about all I know about it

My biggest problem, (I think), is that when I restarted the notebook the Acer logo flashed on the screen and then just a single cursor flashed repeatedly in the top left hand corner of the screen.
It doesn't load anything or let me do anything.

The hard drive is sata but my biggest problem is that when I restarted the notebook nothing happened … the Acer logo flashed on the screen and then just a single cursor flashed repeatedly in the top left hand corner of the screen.
I can't seem to get past this point
