Lightbulb How to instal RHEL (linux) on external drive ?

    hello

i did partions on external drive and there is swap on one and linux on another partion and one is left empty.

    1) problem: my laptop doesn't recognise the linux. laptop boot order:
    1. optical drive 2. memory stick 3. internal hard drive 4. usb flash drive 5. some x .
    2) one thing i want to tell;there is no external drive listed in boot order.
    3) i disabled every other drive and enabled usb flash drive. the problem is whn i start laptop it is just showing "Grub" and not going further. (my opinion grub is not able to understand the linux which is intalled on external drive or the there is any thing connected with drive specifications ?.

    4) through network computer my turor installed rhel (linux) on my laptop because optical drive (dvd drive)is not working.

    please help ,thank you.

It's probably down to there being no USB support in the initrd which is used when booting. Take a look at this thread which walks through using a USB drive with Fedora - it's very similar to RHEL, and it should be an identical process to make it work.

This has nothing to do with Grub, it's your bios that's not recognizing it right.

My laptop does the same thing, the only way that it recognizes a USB drive or external (at least before OS is installed) is to push the USB in right before the Bios screen is done loading. Once the OS is installed it doesn't need this any longer but I install Ubuntu from a stick and if I leave the stick in when I boot the computer it's not recognized
