    Create Suse vmx?

    Hi All,

Trying to install OpenSuse 11.1 KDE on virtual player. I looked for instructions do create a vmx file for it and haven't found anything. I created a vmx for XP using these instructions:

HOWTO: Install Windows XP/2000 in VMWare Player - Ubuntu Forums

any ideas how to alter the vmx to make OpenSuse work? I tried just changing names over and it loaded but failed to get to a GUI, also asked for login in a terminal setting and wouldn't let me log in using anything (tried su, user, etc...) kept saying login failed

    hi there,

don't know installing an OS for the vmplayer (cause it's only supposed to play
vm's, right? to install an OS you'd need the workstation version or similar, iirc).

    but

here's what i'd do: there is a downloadable appliance of SUSE 11.0 KDE here.
i'm no SuSE user anymore, but i'm assuming once you have 11.0 up and
running there will be a way to upgrade to 11.1.

    cheers, kai

It is possible to create your own vmx files, just not easy like with workstation...that's what I was hoping to learn. The HOWTO that I posted shows how to make a vmx for XP and it works great.

If you want to create VM's with VMWare, just install the *free* VMWare Server.

** I would still recommend Server 1.X over the 2.X release.

You could also just go ahead with Sun Virtual Box. I've got SuSE in that and it works like a shine.

By the way, can't you just download the virtual systems from the VMWare site?

I tried VB and it installed no problem, everything works accept it won't full screen for me. I've install the tools and it still just refuses to full screen, I've read quite a few forums that talk abou this issue

I somehow got the guest additions working, but then came a SuSE update, which ruined all. Now it doesn't work any more.

    Hi,

I would not go through the headache of creating VMX file manually. Just use VMX Builder and answer few questions to generate a nice VMX file for your VMware Player. VMX Builder is free & you can find more about it on the following post:

    virtualizationteam.com/virtualization-vmware/vmx-builder.htm

    I hope that help,
    Erick
