Most of Linux Installation CD/DVDs have Recovery Option. IIRC, Alternate installation CDs have that option too.

Most of LiveCDs have Installation option too and Ubuntu LiveCD work as Installation CD too. Boot up from Alternate or LiveCD and select Recovery/Rescue option in Boot Menu.

why not fresh install 8.10 and just not format the partition so your home folder is saved?

I went for the option of upgrade because I wanted to keep original config. files and added sofware. Home folder is in its own partition,I dont even know if "recovery" option on alternate cd will wipe these out, same as fresh installation. I'm not entirely sure how to proceed!

I never upgrade because it always seems to cause issues. I also have my home partition separate and that's where all of your configs are stored. I reinstall probably once a month or more (I try too many alphas). I actually got help writing a script to automate the installation process after the OS install (installs all of my software and does the upgrades, and wireless) all with one command. Then one reboot and everything is back exactly how it was before

original problem solved by adjusting an entry in fstab. Upgrading 7.10 to 8.04 changes designation names of partitions and fstab needs to be adjusted accordingly. Obliged for the help.
