Almost Ready to Give Up
It is 1:26 AM here. I started to download Ubuntu early yesterday. After several hours it stopped.
Started over again last night about 7Pm. It was at 680 out of 685 or something like that and it said there was not enough memory somewhere and stopped again.
I just started again. Won't be finished for another 4 or 5 hours if it finishes.
I already have Fedora10 and Mint 6 on the computer but cannot find any way to get the screen resolution to 1024 X 768. I am computer illerate when it comes to making the changes people say.
I have seen several mentions of it on these forums and have tried a lot of them with no avail.
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 5500 video card installed and tried to updaye the driver.
When I look on the NVIDIA site using Windows it tells me which driver to use.
When I try to find it unsing Mint6, I gt the message from NVIDIA that they don't support Linus. I asked for the driver name from NVIDIA and have it.
No way to load that number into the Mint6 site from what i can tell.
I am lost. ( Also tired).
Will rest while the download is going on.

You had already posted the same problem earlier. I had asked to see if you can change the resolution from the options in the desktop itself. If you have tried that and if you could not find your resolution in the list then probably its issue with the driver.
If its too difficult for you to follow instructions, IMHO, it would be best to find a linux guy near to your place and get it fixed. Once you have a working system that you are satisfied with and come to terms with the linux way, you can explore further.A candle looses nothing by lighting other candles. - Khalil Zibran.

Hello and Welcome!

Assuming we're in Fedora 10 here, nVidia drivers are relatively easy to deal with. Check out this page for some info on this.Jay

Almost Read to Give Up
Saivan
Sorry.
I was very tired and am very mixed up. I just woke up for awhile and am watching the final end of the loading of Ubuntu.
I tried to remember when you asked and it dawned on me that I was waiting to figure out if the Unbuntu was going to work. Then I was going to send the filed if I can find them.
I still haven't figured out where I go to enter these commands that everyone talks about. I am getting a windows like screen all the time except when I go to terminal and then it gives me a cursor and blank screen except for a symbol at the beginning. I tried a few commands and it didn't seem to know them so I gave up on it.
I am determined to get this fixed somehow.
I don't know any Filipinos who are using a computer much less, using Linux. It seems to be another foreign language to them. I am out in the Province and as far as I can tell, I am one of the few on the Internet besides the Internet cafes and they are on Windows. Most just are making money and someone else comes in and sets that up for them.
I do have Fedora and Mint set up on the computer so I figured out how to do that part. I should have enough room for Ubuntu also on my 80 Gb drive ( I was brain dead before when I said Ghz.)
I have printed three or four books on the different systems and will probably print another one for Ubuntu when I find one.
Maybe I just want to get a book on how to program the system and how to modify the source codes to get the results I want. I don't really understand that part yet.
Sorry if I gave you a difficult time. I have been posting on several forums and am planning to stay with this one and drop the other ones except fot the Linux course one that I am going through.

The Ubuntu download stalled at the same point again. I will stick with the Fedora for now.
How do I download the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.29-pkg1.run driver?
When I go to the Nvdia site it says they only support Windows.
Is there another place I can go?
I am dealing with a very large screen and some of them do not allow me to go up and down.
I do this part by logging off on Linux and logging in the windows to contact people.

I googled for nouveau and it seemed to be saying that noveau is going to be included in Fedora 11. I think it may be available for download now so I won't have this problem (I hope) then I can get on with the learning curve and operate from there.
I will keep you posted.

That was where I received the message that Linux is not supported by that site. The only way I coould get those screens was to access it from Windows and then I cannot put it in Linux because I must close this OS and open Mint.

I have a NVIDIA driver listed and can download and activate it but it seems to be an old one that only gives a few of the 860X340 or something like that options. I need to find 1024X768.

So you are referring to a *web browser* compatibility issue when accessing the Nvidia website - not that Nvidia doesn't have a Linux driver for you to download...

You can download the Nvidia driver to any OS/machine and put it on a USB drive/CD to transfer it. You can also access your Windows partitions while Linux is running.
