Mount internal HD?
Hi everyone, brand spanking new user here. Installed Ubuntu 8.1 to a spare external USB HD and it all runs nice and groovy, and I'm booting it from my XP SP3 laptop no probs.
The question - Ubuntu obviously detects the laptop's internal HD, so is it safe to mount that HD (to transfer or use files on it) given that it has my XP install and livelihood contained on it?
Thanks in advance!

One answer: YES.
To elaborate a little, if you have a seperate partition on your internal HD for storing data (D drive or E drive etc) and if it is partitioned with FAT/FAT32 file system, no problem at all. If your drives are NTFS partioned, or you have one single partition (C drive only) then you need to excercise some caution. Plus, for writing to NTFS filesystems you also need to have a program called 'ntfs-3g' installed on your linux. But otherwise, the answer to your question is 'Yes'.A candle looses nothing by lighting other candles. - Khalil Zibran.

Thanks! I probably won't attempt it then as everything's on a single NTFS C, I have too much work stuff on that drive to risk it. Out of curiosity has anyone tried this?

Technically its always good practice to have backup of our important data. The more important the data is to us, the more important it becomes to take backup.
That said, itn't your sig and above aprehension contradicting? Take necessary precautions then go ahead and explore the world...

LOL! Hey, after 19 years of MS taking the leap to Linux is a big enough exploration thanks!

Although... my bro's lappy has the same setup as mine... hmmm...
