Linux alternative for Windows
Hi,
I have to write a thesis about 'Linux as alternative for Windows', and make a presentation about it. I have to compare 2 Windows systems and 3 Linux systems, and explain them and name the advantages and disadvantages etc.
As a newbie, I don't know exactly where to start. I've seen a couple of Linux distro's in school (Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE, DSL etc) but don't know which ones to choose for my thesis, and maybe there are better distro's out there.
If anyone has ideas or suggestions, please post them. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Linuxforums.
I think your best bet would be to begin with the distro package installation types and focus on that.I've seen a couple of Linux distro's in school (Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE, DSL etc) but don't know which ones to choose for my thesis, and maybe there are better distro's out there.
Use one .rpm based distro, one .deb based distro and one source based distro.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

I would go for Ubuntu (deb based, user friendly), Fedora (rpm based, cutting edge, a bit less user friendly when it comes to codecs and proprietary software) and Puppy Linux (lightweight, less than 100MB!). And Gentoo, which is source-based.

Welcome to the forums!
It will be hard to compare them if you haven't tried all of them. You can check the link in my signature for some information on getting started with Linux. You'll find a couple of quizzes there that will help you to pick some distributions for starting out.
After you've tried a few Linux distributions, you should have a better idea about how to compare them with Windows. Of course, until you've put the effort into Linux that you've put into Windows, it probably can't be a fair comparison.
Either way, best of luck with your project!

And if you want to compare some of the applications as well, check this link
