    Confusing distro names

Light has just dawned, and I think I should share it with other newbies, even though I might risk derision!

For about 5 months I've been looking up information about MythTV - a TV application running under Ubuntu 8.04. I've seen references to Debian which I've rejected as not being applicable, and references to wildlife like heron and ibex, and to things like hardy and intrepid, none of which are applicable either.

Of course, Debian is applicable as it is a family name for Ubuntu and others, and the other names are also relevant as they are releases of Ubuntu - see:

    Hope this helps.

If you're interested in Myth TV and don't want to spend several years setting it up then Mythbuntu might be of interest

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Hi Jonathan, quite right, but I had it firmly set in my mind that Heron etc are quite distinct beasts from Ubuntu and that Ubuntu releases are identified numerically eg 8.04, 8.10 so I just didn't go down the line of questioning ubuntu releases! I KNEW they were numeric so any articles about (say) Heron became automatically irrelevant. Stupid? Yes, guilty as charged!

Elija: yes, thanks. I am using Mythbuntu 8.04.1 and it looks promising, but is still a steep learning curve.

    Thanks both.
