In the USA, most corporations run either Redhat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise (SLED). In Europe Novell is also popular, but so is Mandriva.

Most Linux sysadmin jobs I have seen here in the UK seem to require knowledge of Red Hat. I have seen the occassional job that requires NOVELL SLES or Ubuntu, but they are not as common as Red Hat.

Agreed. Red Hat for alot of what you'll run into. I've also found the quite a few networking servers run SuSE.

If you're interested in doing system administration, then knowing the peculiarities of a distro like RHEL or SUSE would be important (as everybody else here has stated).

However, if you're simply planning to be writing software on Linux systems, your distro basically doesn't matter. Each distro sets up its configuration a bit differently, and may have their own patches for the kernel, but from a programmer's perspective, they're basically the same.
