Linpus on Aspire One?
Hi, I'm new here, and I'm AspireOneFan.
I'd like to know more about the Linpus Linux distro. I am totally new to Linux, but I have a few questions before I choose the Linux PC.
- Is it easy to download programs, such as Skype, or an AntiVirus program on Linpus Linux Lite?
- Is it really a good OS, or should I just leave it and stick with the XP version?
- Would it be compatible with an Epson stylus C66 photo edition printer?
- Can I use my external USB mouse with it, produced by "PC Line"?
- Would files recorded by my camcorder (Aiptek Pocket DV) be read easily on the OS, I think I'll be using the built in card reader to do this!
Hope you can give me a hand!

Just to say, I haven't actually used an Aspire with Linpus on it, but, I have answered an awful lot of questions regarding it on a couple of different forums. My overall impression is that if I bought an aspire, the first thing I would do is replace the OS with a different linux version. (I don't like Windows and I don't like proprietary software, so personally, XP would never touch my machine.) That said...
1. It is not as easy to install new programs as on most other linux distros. There are a few hoops you need to jump through to have success with some programs.
2. See my opinion above.
3. The Epson should work fairly well with most distros. No idea if there would be problems installing the drivers under Linpus. OpenPrinting database - Printer: Epson Stylus C66
4. Should work fine.

Hmm, looking at your questions, I would suggest something along the lines of reed9. Look in my opinion and in the opinion of a lot of people, a Linux distro is far better than XP. Now if you use a linux distro which is easy to use to newcomers, like Ubuntu or Linux mint. Installing skype is a matter of a few clicks. You would not need an antivirus, with linux. So thats a plus.
Yes a linux distro should be compatible with the printer, you might need drivers for that. But once you have decided the distro you want to use, you can get the drivers.
As for the external USB mouse, you should not have any problem with that. Though just to be on the safe side, you might want to keep it plugged in whilst installing the OS.
As for the files from the camcorder, you should not have a problem with that.
All in all, if I were you, I would go with the aspire one, and after buying it, I would play around with Limpus a liitle, otherwise I would replace it with Ubuntu or Linux mint. Both are fairly easy to use and have a huge amount of online support and help. So best of luck!!
