    Hello. Intro and Q"s

    Hi Guys/Gals:

I am an absolute Linux NEWB and need your help if you would be so kind. I pieced together(put an old hard drive...20GB) into an old computer my Grandmother gave me when the original hard drive failed. The computer is mostly an old HP Pavilion 6830 (Intel Celeron 700MHz Processor and 64MB RAM). I plan to give this old computer to my daughter so that she can "play" with it if you will . Her Birthday is tomorrow and I would like to have it running for her. I would put a copy of Windows on, but I really don't want to spend the $$$ on a machine worth less than $.50, also....What a rocking way to introduce myself to a different OS.

    1. I've lurked around an found is that DSL or Puppy would probably be best the best match for the equipment I plan to install it on. Am I correct in this?

    2. I've read the how- to's and am still having trouble trying to download an burn successfully a disk that will boot. any further help would be greatly appreciated.

    3. Truth be told, I am not sure that I have a burn program that will work

    Thank you,
    Aaron

Howdy and Welcome to LFO wearyofwindows. Puppy would be a fine choice although a little slower than DSL on 64 mb of ram. I would try loading this version of Puppy because I have had success on 64mb of ram on it. . DownloadPuppy301 | Puppy Linux

Here is free image burn software for Windows that is simple to use

    The Official ImgBurn Website

I would pick a mirror that will download a http image and save it to your desktop. Then check md5sum for data integrity so you know image isn't corrupted.Nullriver Software : Products : WinMD5Sum download and install winmd5sum to do this.

Then use image burn to burn an iso image of download to cd. Set bios to boot off of cd. And you are off to the races.

If I remember correctly. The Desktop/GUI which is JWM (Jims Windows Manager) only pulls about 2mb of ram to run. Use the universal installer from the link I gave you to install to Hardrive. One of those Links should get you over any humps. I wrote a tutorial but it was for installing Puppy inside Windows 95. My tutorial won't apply to your install. Since Windows doesn't exist. I'll give ya the Link anyways for info and grins.

Thanks again for all of your help ROKYTNJI. I had NO idea just how addictive this linux stuff is. I think I'm going to the local computer do it yourself joint tomorrow and find some new/old junk to assemble and load up a Linux Distro on it. Not ready to throw in the hat with my XP machine (its just too familiar), but I can say that this Linux stuff is more fun than I expected
