cannot use linux smoothly, need a little help with simple tasks

Hi, how are you all. I fairly computer literate but unfortunatley only with windows OS's. I recently decided to learn how to use linux. I downloaded the Debian version of linux. Ive succesfully installed but i cannot for the life of me even figure out how to use downloads such as Mozilla firefox. I downloaded firefox, but i cant figure out to to get it on the desktop or use it. I also tried to download a new theme, but cannot figure out how to actually install/use the new theme. Please help, im EXTREMLEY frustrated. Thank you.

    Hi and Welcome !

Its really easy to install packages in Linux. Isn't Firefox pre-installed in Debian? Look for Iceweasel. Its Firefox clone and difference is in name only.

For package installation, open Synaptic Package Manager. Select package from list and install it.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

In Linux, installing something does not put it on your desktop by default as happens in Windows. It's up to you to make a launcher for it if you want it there. You don't say what desktop you are using, but for most desktop environments, you right-click and choose "new/launcher". Or you can use a menu editor like Alacarte to put it in a desktop menu.

Read this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sw...ws#Differences between Ubuntu and Windows

Ubuntu is based on Debian, so much of it will apply to Debian as well. The concepts apply to any linux distro.
