My biggest suggestion is not to have purchased a computer with an ATI graphics card. Hopefully you won't run into too many problems. Otherwise, only you can answer the question of what the perfect distro is. Best advice is to try a number of different ones and see what you like.

    Hello and Welcome!
You might also benefit from the Distro Quiz, it is pretty darned good at helping you pick a good distro for your needs.

    Welcome to the forums!

I'm not sure that the perfect distro exists at all, but as indicated above the best way to find the distro best suited for your personal tastes and your computer hardware is to actually download and try a few of them. The link presented by MikeTbob is usually a very good first step.

Best of luck with your distro search.

I took the quiz and was told to try Mandriva first, then Fedora, then Ubuntu, then Linux Mint, then Open suse. Is Mandriva better suited for a newbie than Ubuntu?

They seem about the same as far as being geared for new Linux users to me. I'm sure that others here will have different opinions.

No one can change the past Ozar but I sure wish that suse 10 was not my first linux distro because it was very frustrating. If it was not for my graphics card problem I would just stick with Ubuntu.

It is said that everything happens for a reason so I guess I am just meant to try out Mandriva , Fedora, and Linux Mint.

The biggest issue with laptops seems to be support for wireless connectivity. In this case, currently Ubuntu 8.10 seems to have the edge. It has worked well for me on all the systems I have tried. That said, I have had systems with Gentoo, Mepis, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, and Suse 10. I am currently running CentOS on my workstation/server and Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
