    Help me decide

    Hi,

i am having extreme difficulty finding the perfect linux distro for me.

i am a complete beginner when it comes to linux, but i love it mostly because its stable and fast. when i want to check something out on the web, i dont want to have to wait for windows to boot up, so heres what im looking for.

a distro that is more or less 100% GUI, as i have no clue how to use terminal commands. also, one that boots very quickly and is easy to connect to a wireless network.

it needs to have a web browser, mail and messenger clients and maybe open office. thats about it.

ive been searching for a while trying to find one and so far ive used:
    Ubuntu 8.10
    gOS 3.1 'gadgets'
    Fedora 10
    PCLinuxOS

none of them were really what i was looking for.

any help would be much appreciated.
    thanks.

What about the distros you tried didn't you like? Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS are generally considered two of the most newbie friendly distros out there, as far as ease of use and not needing the command line. Ultimately, you'll just have to keep testing out ditros until you find one that suits you. I distro-hopped for I don't know how many months before I settled on Arch Linux.

Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server are the best.

It would help to know what about these distros you didn't like.

Your requirements can be fulfilled by virtually every single distro under the sun, including those that you already tried.

The thing about Linux, is that there is no perfect distribution, for anybody. Because you have control over the system in all particulars, you get to find one that works for you, and then make it your perfect system over time.

You say you need one that is easy to use, boots quickly (that's relative, for sure), and is easy to connect to a wireless network. For my $$ (or time anyway, since time is $$) I would suggest you try Ubuntu 8.10. It has a very good standard GUI (others are available if you want to experiment), excellent wireless network support (the best I've found so far), comes with Firefox and a number of other web browsers, and all the rest, plus OpenOffice. You can download the ISO images and burn your own installation discs, or if you cannot, or do not want to do that, you can go to the Ubuntu web site, and they will ship you a set of free installation / liveCD discs at no cost, though it will take 4-6 weeks to get them to you.

Anyway, since you tried Ubuntu 8.10 and said it wasn't really what you were looking for, take my words to heart. Linux is a system that you make fit you over time. No distribution will be exactly what you want, and some will work better than others on your hardware. But you DO have a choice of what to install, how to configure it, and how it will work with you. Windows doesn't give you that option - what you get is what you have and if you want to change the GUI, good luck!
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!

In fact, I believe that, Linux is the only OS which can be perfect for any body.

Linux is like clay, you don't get used to your Linux, but you can mold it as you like. or make your own one..which is like 100% perfect for yourself

Rob71092, until you are new to linux, there's no way to choose perfect distro from suggestions, but trying out what you get is the best way.

One of my friend a newbie to linux liked Slackware, instead of any other desktop distro X_X.

My advice? Keep trying. Linux flavors are like flavors of anything else; you're going to try some and hate them and others you'll like. It will take a lot of trial and error before you find one that you love. Your requirements are not unique to any one distribution, so try several more. DistroWatch is an excellent place to look for new ones. Best of luck.
