.mov is a media container format, which means it's like a wrapper around different encoding methods, which is why some files play fine and others throw this error - they are probably different formats even though they're all ".mov" files. I would guess the problem files are h.264. Try this.

Hi, thanks for your reply and I was able to access the other page through the link you provided, but what option am I choosing?
Sorry, but I'm a COMPLETE newbie! Just setting up the sharing between the two computers took 10 forum pages and all day yesterday, with a HUGE thank you sent out to Rubberman!!

This is the bit I suggest trying.
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC playback is too slow
You can speed up the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC playback by disabling loop filter for H.264 decoding. To do this go to Tools -> Preferences... (set Show Settings to All) and Input / Codecs -> Other codecs -> FFmpeg and in the drop-down box for Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding change it to All. Remember to press Save to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

Well, I'm lost, and it's only the beginning!!
When I opened VLC, there's nothing that gives me Tools!

When you run VLC from the command line, just start it in the background like this: vlc &
The trailing ampersand tells the system to run the process in the background, so you will get your prompt back right away. The root VLC window should appear, looking like this (more or less):
vlc-root.jpg
Note the Tools menu next to Help? Click on that.Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

My VLC doesn't look like that, it has,
File, view, settings, audio, video, navigation and help.
The version I'm running is different perhaps? Here's what comes up in the Terminal window when I launch it.
[user@localhost home]$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.7 Janus

Well, just think how far you've come in a few days! Already you are creating links to shared folders with your Windows system across the network, you know how to switch to the root user account for privileged system functions. You are running videos on your Linux laptop which are stored on your Windows desktop. Awesome! This is just another bump in the road, but all your wheels are still on the ground, so just keep on truckin'!

Ok. You are running an older version of VLC. I'm at v9.9 and you are at v8.7. That could explain it. Try the Settings menu instead and let us know what you find there. You also might check into getting an updated version of vlc, which might not have this problem with your .mov files.
