Linux on a USB
Thanks to my new friends on Linux Forums. I was able to find the site to download Linux and place it on a USB. At the moment I have not been successful at getting the system installed.
The system I downloaded is Xubuntu 9.04.
Now I did do things differently than the site's directions. I was using a library computer. So I changed the destination drive for the download to be a 2GB PNY USB. Folowing the directions as if it was saved to the C drive. My idea being that the installer will ask me the drive to install the system on. The I could direct it to the 2GB ScanDisk. I proceeded to open the system, as if it were on the C drive. When I attempted to run the batch file the editor said the command prompt was disabled by the administrator.
By all appearances the system will install correctly once I place the two USBs in a different machine that does not have the command editor disabled.
Thoughts and opinions are welcome.
Actually, I am quite proud of myself. I got this far without locking up thr system.

Hello, and welcome to Linux Forums

If you downloaded an image file of Ubuntu, it would have a .iso extension on it. That file is only meant to be burned to a CD or DVD (depending on the size). There are methods for setting up a bootable USB drive with the .iso file. Is this what you are trying to accomplish?
If you want to do this from a Windows PC, you can follow the instructions from the PenDrive Linux site:
USB Xubuntu 9.04 Persistent Install (Windows) | USB Pen Drive LinuxPaul

Most of the guides will assume you have admin rights on the PC you will download to. In this case you will probably end up having to download each file to a pendrive and copy it across to the PC you want to do the install on (or at least another PC you have admin rights on).

I doesn't look like the Pen Drive Linux method uses the command line. If you have permissions to all of the files and folders that you are using, you may be able to do it without Administrator permissions. You actually aren't installing a program on Windows, so it may allow it.
If you save files to your Desktop, and install to your USB drive, it may then work.Paul

It's no bother to help, but in the future help questions should not be in the coffee lounge.
If this is a homework (schoolwork) question, then it is not allowed. You get two bananas for being so honest!
