STILL having problems with VLC!! HEEELP! (Again..)
Hi again! After HUGE problems trying to get .mov files created by my camcorder to play at ALL, I can now SEE the video as well as hearing it. (No I've no idea what I did either, sorry). But, not without problems as the video playback is choppy. The audio seems fine, (always has been though), here's the error messages I'm getting.
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
[????????] x11 video output error: X11 request 42.0 failed with error code 8:
BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes
and the second I'm getting is
[00000442] avcodec decoder error: more than 5 seconds of late video -> dropping frame (computer too slow ?)
I'm thinking that something could be changed under the convert/save option, but I don't know what to change them TO. I've tried several different codecs etc., but still end up with choppy video and eventually, the playback will just freeze, then stops all together!!
Please note that I'm a COMPLETE Newbie, so if there are any fixes out there, please be GENTLE with me!!

Hi katmac
You know, vlc media player is my favorite in windoze, but the linux version gives me no end of hell. I know that it's probably to do with the selected output device etc. etc. but trying to get that sorted is painful.
My suggestion is to look at "mplayer"... it has a gui called "gmplayer", and should be available in your repositories as a standard download. Mplayer supports tons of formats, including movs. And I find that it's video and audio output just work.
The only issue I have ever come across is an audio lag issue with some DVD's (no idea why) but playing them in "xine" solved the problems. However, xine does not support the same number of formats as mplayer, and mplayer is faster to load, and easier to use, IMHO.
May the Force be with you.Respectfully... Sarlac II

The moving clock K' appears to K to run slow by the factor (1-v^2/c^2)^(1/2).
This is the phenomenon of time dilation.
The faster you run, the younger you look, to everyone but yourself.

Seems like a graphic card issue? Are you running compiz? there have been quite a few reports on vlc, totem hanging when playing videos in compiz, and nvidia graphic cards. do you have nvidia graphic card as well?

sorry about that...
Something came up, sorry for the delay there!
As for your questions, I'm sorry, but I'll have to reply with a VERY 'Newbie'
huh?
Where would I go to try and see if those things are on the computer?
If you're referring to GNOME-MPLAYER, someone walked me through the installation of that one last weekend, but it's not playing them either.
I think that the sheer size of the files may be partly to blame, one I have that's only 30 mins long is 1.05 GB!!!!Last edited by katmac; 05-02-2009 at 08:17 PM. Reason: add

As a matter of fact...
I tried the same file with gnome-mplayer (properly this time!!) and the file that giving me problems looks like everyone is moving about under-water! Here's the error message I got if anyone can tell me where to plug in all the suggestions given, (like the -autosync option, if I try to enter that in the Terminal page, it tells me that it's an unknown), perhaps I can change something? ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!
Here's what I got.....

It's the weekend, weather is nice (finally), and people are out and about. Patience!

Let's go back to your earlier postings when reed9 posted this:Can you try that with VLC?H.264/MPEG-4 AVC playback is too slow
You can speed up the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC playback by disabling loop filter for H.264 decoding. To do this go to Tools -> Preferences... (set Show Settings to All) and Input / Codecs -> Other codecs -> FFmpeg and in the drop-down box for Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding change it to All. Remember to press Save to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!

Love to, but MY tools, etc. doesn't HAVE an option for show settings to all and when I DO bring up Preferences, I can't view the BOTTOM of the page.
Arrrrgh! This thing is gonna FLY, I'm telling you..

I think I've had this thing up to my EYEBALLS at THIS stage of the game....any ideas regarding the error messages I was getting in the gnome-mplayer?
