Myxo Has Gotten Better At Linux(2)!

..hmm maybe someone got it.. haha surely some kindred souls here ..

Anyway, on to topic!! (if you detect sarcasm at any time in this post, you're probably on target ;P )

I finally migrated from windows for reasons I explain to my friend when he asked such as..

"XP just well.... kept disappointing me, especially the fact that i had all this raw power in my computer and lacked the ability to harness it
i had the same problem with the monster desktop i built
so i said hell... if i MUST i'll make a 15gb XP partition OR i can actually just run windows INSIDE of linux as a program lol, you should see it.. its great"

and of course I don't need to explain why I tried to run XP on a 64-bit system after Vista left me on the brink of .. ugh I don't want to talk about it.

Anyway this is my "Hi" post. I am sure it will be followed by many "help" posts but thats is what happens when migrating to a new system of doing things.

I'm 23, and an EE major in North Carolina. I enjoy gaming in MMO's, RTS and a few single player RPG's.. FPS a bit but not seriously. I play guitar and would love to incorporate my laptop into that, I would also love to pick up a MIDI keyboard sometime in the near future... more near depending on the capabilities of my computer with this new OS.

My hardware setup is an ASUS G50v MOBO w. a Nvidia 9700GT, sound-card is built in so I am not sure of the quality.. but I know the on-board speakers are pathetic and have relied on using headphones, not really a big disappointment as I find that is the best way to become immersed in what you are doing. My perfect environment is sitting in a room only lit by my monitor and maybe a small candle( ^_^ ) playing WoW (yea I know pathetic.. or EQemu!! d2 etc) with my feet propped up sitting in Vent with some good ol' 65daysofstatic blaring through my headphones (at a safe level! we all want to keep our hearing, lol..) or other more obscure snooty "underground" bands on a play-list while I turn my nose up at the radio in superiority..

Along with my hi I would like to request a bit of suggestion in direction.. I am in need of direction to find some "basic applications".. to explain I understand that "basic" means something a little different to everyone and I'm asking this with that in mind. I am wanting opinions on which programs anyone reading this and willing to apply considers essential and why? Put into account that I don't currently have a wireless access point where I am living and spend much time off-line, so any fun learning software for programming or things of that sort would be welcome as well. Anyway thanks in advance for the suggestions, and thank you for all the tips I am sure I will stumble across~!

    Welcome to the forums!

You can take a look at these two websites for some software options that might work for you:

The table of equivalents / replacements / analogs of Windows software in Linux. (Official site of the table)

Linux App Finder | Helping find the Linux apps you need

As for my own must have apps, I like to keep the following programs/applications close by:

    web browser
    word processor
    text editor
    terminal
    file manager

Hope you are able to find what you are looking for.
