Welcome to the forums!
You can try the speed tweaks suggested here:
Howto: Tweak your Internet connection and maximize your bandwidth in Ubuntu/Linux via sysctl!
Some of them seemed to increase the speed of my own connection.oz

Bandwidth depends only on the physical media and your provider.
There might be ways to use it better or worse, but nothing will make your band broader than what you contracted.

The only way I know to increase bandwidth beyond what your ISP provides is to use compression of the data streams, and you and the server have to work together on this. I use the giganews.com newsgroup servers for Usenet services and they have a tool that provides stream compression of the newsgroup headers. On my 6mbps dsl link, I get up to 48mbps effective thruput when downloading newsgroup headers. It doesn't work for anything else, but it is a good example of how compression can increase network thruput. HTML should compress pretty well, so it would be nice if there were a standard way to support this technique. Unfortunately, this is not being done currently, AFAIK.
Caveat User: their tool only works on Windoze...
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
