    Error in grub boot process

I have an IBM clone pc with an American Megatrends BIOS (if that is relevant)

I have downloaded SimplyMEMPIS and burnt a CD. On switch on using this CD I get the messages:-

    Grub versuib 0.97
    Graphics initialisation failed
    Default (for most systems)
Run C/D with r/w (if 1Gb ram or more)
    60 MHz for digital monitors
and several other lines which disappear
too quickly for me to write them down
You passed an undefined mode number press return to see video modes available
ACPI: no DMI BIOS year, acpi = force is required to enable ACPI
    atai.00 cmd c8/00 --- etc
ata1.01 ewvalidation failed (error no -19)

There is a flashing cursor, but it does not appear to respond to any key strokes or combination of strokes that I could think of

I am sure this will all mean something to many experts out there, but I am at a loss.

I would be very appreciative of any advice so that I can progress with linux as I would like to get away from Windows and from your forums there are such good reports of this alternative.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give.

That does not look like a Grub probelm.
    You passed the grub steps.

That looks like a disk problem.
    Never make any misteaks.
