I can't find a link now, but I believe it stands for "Advanced Server". Similarly the ES line stands for "Enterprise Server".
I could be completely wrong on that, but it's been stuck in my head as that since it launched.
EDIT - It seems I may be correct, though these names are not stated in the official documentation.

even i couldn't find a link , everywhere they have used AS but no where it is mentioned what exactly it means. There are three verison WS,ES,AS if i m not worng

Oh yeah, the WS. I believe that one is simply "WorkStation".
